(CAMBY) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a hunting incident that occurred Saturday evening in Morgan County near the town of Camby.

At approximately 6 p.m. first responders with the Morgan County Sheriff's Department and EMS were dispatched to the area of 7200 Spring Lake Road in Camby for a person that was injured when their firearm inadvertently discharged while hunting.

51-year-old Douglas Owens of Camby was hunting from an elevated tandem tree stand with a juvenile family member when his firearm discharged striking him in the left hand.

Owens was able to call 911 for assistance. Owens was transported to IU Heath Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

ICO Kendrick Fuhrman discovered during the investigation that Owens was preparing to end his hunt and began to descend from the tree stand when he lost control of his firearm and it began to fall from the stand. During the fall, the firearm struck something causing it to discharge, striking Owens in the left hand.

Indiana Conservation Officers urge all hunters to always practice proper firearm safety by unloading firearms and ensuring that the safety is activated when ascending and descending tree stands.
