(BLOOMFIELD) - Jason Lee Caldwell of Solsberry appeared in Greene Superior Court late Thursday afternoon and admitted he was guilty of the murder of 54-year-old David Lamm.

Caldwell was 35 at the time of his arrest in July and was charged with Lamm's murder and eight other serious felonies including rape. He is also facing three possible sentence enhancements.

Caldwell is accused of shooting Lamm in the face at Lamm's residence in the Newark area on Saturday, July 19.
He was apprehended just after 4 a.m. Monday, July 21 in Indianapolis, then transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in on a parole warrant. Later that week, Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw filed the murder case against Caldwell.

Greene County Chief Public Defender Alan Baughman is representing Caldwell, who on Thursday, changed his plea to guilty to murder and guilty to one count of felony rape in a plea agreement.

Under the terms of that agreement Caldwell also admitted to being an habitual felony offender in connection with the requested sentence enhancement on the murder charge.

The state agreed to dismiss the other counts and requests and not file any additional requests for enhanced sentences.

Sentencing was left up to the discretion of the court, but the agreement does specify that Caldwell will get an additional ten years for being an habitual offender, on top of whatever the judge hands down on the murder count.

The penalty for the murder would be 45-65 years, and he must serve at least 75 percent of the time.

The negotiated plea and Caldwell's admissions were taken under advisement and if accepted by the court, a judgement of conviction will be entered against him.

Following a pre-sentence investigation, Caldwell faces sentencing in mid-December.
