(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University police expanded their patrols to off-campus neighborhoods following the sexual assaults of two female students.
IU Police Chief Laury Flint believes expanding patrols to a few blocks beyond the campus will make a difference. The university estimates about 30,000 students live in off-campus homes and apartments.
Flint says IU police already were doing some patrolling off campus but the policy change increased those patrols.
Mark Bruhn, IU's Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Institutional Assurance, has given Flint and her department immediate orders to extend their patrols, in marked squad cars, to student-heavy neighborhoods, two to three blocks past the outskirts of campus.
The increased patrols came after two female IU students were raped at gunpoint when two Indianapolis men broke into their locked off-campus apartment and sexually assaulted two 24-year-old women and exchanged gunfire with a Bloomington Police officer. Police arrested the suspected assailants and an accomplice within 15 minutes of the incident. The men were not IU students.
