Last updated on Monday, November 3, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University basketball forward Devin Davis was in serious condition but improving at IU Health Bloomington Hospital after being struck by a car driven by fellow teammate 18-year-old Emmitt Holt early Saturday morning.

19-year-old Davis, who was a passenger in Holt's vehicle, was struck just moments after exiting the vehicle.

Bloomington police were called to the accident scene at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at 17th Street and Indiana Avenue near the IU Athletics facilities.

Holt was driving a 2012 Jeep Liberty and had just dropped off Davis in the parking lot of Memorial Stadium on the IU campus. According to Holt and other witnesses, Holt exited the parking lot and was traveling west on East 17th Street when for some unknown reason Davie entered the roadway and was stuck by the front passenger side of Holt's Jeep.

When emergency crews arrived Davis was found lying on the north side of the street. He was unconscious and had suffered a head injury. Davis was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.

Police say Holt, had been consuming alcohol, but was not intoxicated. He was issued citations for Illegal Consumption of Alcohol and for Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol Under Age 21.

Team physician Dr Larry Rink says Davis' speech "is normal," and that he has use of all his extremities. He adds that Davis is being treated by the best medical team and that Davis has had incredible support from his family, friends and teammates.

IU Basketball Coach Tom Crean released this statement:

"Too often in life, we all take for granted the simple tasks of opening our eyes, processing thoughts and putting a simple sentence together. In our program , we routinely emphasize to our players that everything matters and watching Devin improve just over the last 36 hours has furthered our belief in that approach.

On behalf of the Davis Family and the IU men's basketball program, we appreciate the concern, calls, texts, and thoughts and prayers we have received. We are especially grateful for every doctor, nurse, and staff member at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. We look forward to his continued recovery.
