Housing Choice Vouchers Program Section 8 Waiting List Opens Thursday

Last updated on Wednesday, November 12, 2014

(MITCHELL) - The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority will open the Housing Choice Voucher Program Section 8 waiting list for Lawrence County on Thursday.

IHCDA administers the HCVP in areas of Indiana not covered by a county or municipal housing authority. In Orange County, the program is administered under a contract with Hoosier Uplands.

The HCVP provides rental assistance to individuals and families whose total annual income falls below the very low-income level, based on median income in the area. Applicants for the program are placed on a waiting list for a voucher, which is issued for an eligible unit. There are a very limited number of vouchers available each year.
Families should plan to be on a waiting list for some time. Assistance is awarded based on preference points.
A family may be on the waiting list for other public housing programs and still apply for the Housing Choice Voucher Program administered by the IHCDA. Each applicant will be asked to designate a county in which his name will be listed. The name will show up only in the county designated.

If the applicant declines to designate a county, his name will automatically be placed on the list in the county from where he applies.

Those who believe they are eligible and are in need of clean and safe housing, should apply by contacting a local Hoosier Uplands office. In Lawrence County, call 849-4447 or (800) 893-4191. Applications will be accepted at 500 W. Main St., Mitchell on Thursday.

Applicants must bring evidence of legal address, such as a driver's license, state ID or utility bill, and Social Security cards and birth certificates for all household members. If employed, bring most recent pay stub. If disabled, bring proof of disability.
