(WASHINGTON) - On December 4th, southern Indiana farmers will have the chance to hear from experts about the potential for soil health practices to reduce input costs and increase profitability on their operations.
The Daviess, Knox, and Martin County Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD), the United States Department of Agriculture - Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), Purdue Extension, Indiana State Department of Agriculture and the Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative (CCSI) will bring together three leaders in soil health at the Washington Park Community Building in Washington, for a discussion of the many aspects of soil health practices and systems.
Larry Huffmeyer, a CCSI Farmer and Certified Crop Advisor from Ripley County, will kick off the event, followed by Dr.
Jim Hoorman of Ohio State University, Barry Fisher of the USDA-NRCS, and Scott Monroe of Purdue Extension.
"The speakers will address several current and relevant challenges faced by southern Indiana farmers. Larry Huffmeyer will discuss weed management strategies, Dr. Hoorman will speak on how improved soil function relates to improved weed control, and Barry Fisher will explore how conservation cropping systems improve soil function. By the end of the workshop, attendees should more fully understand the dynamic ability of soil and how soil can be managed to reduce input costs and increase profitability," said Randy Van Matre, the USDA-NRCS District Conservationist for Daviess and Martin Counties.
PARP credits will be available. Certified Crop Advisor CEUs have been requested (SW 2.0, PM 0.5, CM1.0).
"Soil Health: Weed Control, Cover Crops and Beyond" will take place from 9 a.m. till 2:30 pm on December 4, at the Washington Park Community Building (501 Burkhart Drive, Washington, IN 47501).
Registration is required by November 28th. Cost is $5 for the event, which includes a catered meal from Schnitzelbank restaurant, plus $10 for PARP certification.
