(JACKSON CO.) - Early Tuesday afternoon, a driver of a semi tractor-trailer was arrested for operating while intoxicated after he crashed his truck and ran from the scene on I-65 in Jackson County.

According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Don Gregory, 27-year-old Jose Casares, of Mission, Texas was traveling north on north on I-65 when he fell asleep at the wheel.

Casares awoke and slammed his foot down on the brakes.

That caused the semi to go off the road and overturn on the passenger's side.

Casares then kicked out the front windshield to get out of the truck and ran from the scene into a cornfield and then a wooded area east of the interstate.

Sgt. Gregory located a co-driver, Ramon Buentello 28-year-old of Almao, Texas still inside the sleeper berth of the semi.

ISP Trooper Stephen Wheeles arrived at the scene and deployed his K-9 Kane, who was not able to locate Casares

At 12:10 p.m. a Seymour Police officer located Casares at Frontage Road and County Road 100 South and arrested him without incident.

ISP Sgt. Brian Wilson transported Casares to Schneck Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries he sustained during the crash.

While at the hospital, it was determined that Casares was intoxicated.

After being released from the hospital Casares was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing injury with a prior conviction and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

Buentello was taken by ambulance to Schneck Medical Center and was treated and released.

Sgt. Don Gregory and Sgt. Brian Wilson were assisted at the scene by Master Trooper Marty Mead, Master Trooper Brian Meek, Seymour Police Department, Jackson County EMS and the Seymour Division of INDOT.
