(BROWNSTOWN) - Do you like to deer hunt but don’t like the venison? Wilson’s Locker and the Washington County Food Bank are teaming up to help you.
If a hunter would like to donate venison to the local food bank, they can take their deer to Wilson's Locker, 324 Bolle Street in Brownstown. The plant will then process the deer at no charge to the hunter and arrange for the meat to be donated to a food bank of their choice.
That is all the hunter has to do. After the venison is processed, Ed Branum, owner of Wilson's Locker will contact Saralee Shields at the Washington County Food Bank and arrangements will be made to have the meat picked up.
"We really appreciate having that extra protein to give to our clients. Some of them really like the venison," Shields said.
For the hunter's convenience Wilson's Locker is also a check-in station, open Saturday and Sunday. They will accept any deer that has proof of legal harvest that has been checked in at another location.
"We just like to get the meat while it is fresh," says Branum.
If a hunter wants proof of the donation for tax purposes, they just need to stop by the food bank and ask.
