City Offices Closed For Veterans Day

Last updated on Monday, November 10, 2014

(UNDATED) - All City of Bedford and Mitchell Offices, along with the Lawrence County Courthouse offices and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be closed on Tuesday for Veterans Day.

Bedford TASC buses will not be running. All Tuesday trash pick up in both cities will be picked up as regularly scheduled. Recycling will be picked up on Wednesday in Bedford.

Tuesday's Veterans Day holiday has changed the schedule for some Bedford public meetings. The Bedford Redevelopment Commission will meet Monday at 4 p.m. as scheduled in City Hall.

The Bedford Plan Commission, which would normally meet Tuesday, instead will meet Monday at 4 p.m. in the mayor's office.

The Bedford Board of Works has scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall to consider land acquisition for the Milwaukee Depot project. And the monthly Bedford City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, also in City Hall.

Flags in Brown County are to be flown at half-staff from sunrise Friday, Nov. 7, to noon Tuesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, reports Veterans Service Officer Ron Higgins.

In 1994, Mike O'Hara, a combat veteran from the Marine Corps working in collaboration with the Brown County Vietnam Veterans organization, Brown County government and Brown County Schools, set this agreement to lower flags to half-staff five days before the Veterans Day -- one day for each war the United States has been involved in in the last century.

This is in honor of Larry C. Banks, who was the only person from Brown County who was killed in Vietnam.
