Brown Co. Has Highest Percentage Of Firearm Permit Holders

Last updated on Tuesday, November 25, 2014

(UNDATED) - Brown County is often known for its fall foliage and peaceful state park, but an analyzed gun permit data throughout the entire state and found Brown County also has the highest percentage of firearm permit holders per capita at 17 percent.

The numbers also reveal Brown County has the highest percentage of females with a concealed carry license, at 29 percent. In a crowd of 10 women in Brown County, three of them are likely to have a gun permit.

Lifetime resident and county council member Diana Biddle, who is also the chairwoman for the Brown County chapter of The Well Armed Woman, isn't surprised by those numbers, saying it's a rural self-reliant community with only 14 deputies patrolling more than 300 square miles.

The Well Armed Woman has hundreds of chapters across the country, including eight in Indiana. Their brochure offers everything from conceal carry purses to bra holsters. The group has 20 official members, with more than 100 who have been involved with the chapter and meet the first Sunday of every month, usually outdoors.

Sheriff Rick Followell says crimes in Brown County are not usually committed by people with a license to carry.

In December The Well Armed Woman Brown County chapter will hold a holster fashion show , and in January plans to host the National Rifle Association's "Refuse to Be a Victim" seminar.

Indiana State Police statistics show 570,712 active firearm licenses in the state, with 22 percent belonging to women.
