(UNDATED) - The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is asking more than 250 motorists to pay back refunds they received just one month after $29 million in overcharges on excise taxes were disbursed.
The BMV confirmed overpayment of $60,000 in refunds and that 254 people were notified via letters and phone calls.
Last month, claim forms were mailed to thousands of Indiana motorists to refund $29 million in tax overcharges when vehicles were registered.
The BMV's commissioner said the agency regrets the error and is committed to finding and fixing issues related to fees and taxes.
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles excise tax refund will cost counties millions of dollars. An estimated $19.2 million will be reduced in tax revenue.
This is due to the BMV refunding around $29 million dollars to 185,000 who were overcharged on vehicle registrations between 2004 and 2014.
The $19 million dollar reduction only represents about 2 percent of total excise tax revenue made over two years. The reduction is set to start in June and last around two years.
