Bloomington Rape Suspects Waive Bond Reduction Hearing

Last updated on Wednesday, November 19, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - Two men accused of sexually assaulting two Indiana University students waived their bond reduction hearings at the last minute Tuesday.

Vaylen Glazebrook and Michael DeWeese are being held on half-million-dollar bonds. Both 19-year-olds are suspected of breaking into an off-campus apartment near the IU-Bloomington campus and raping two women inside. The men are also accused of firing shots at a police officer who was pursuing them. Both face charges including attempted murder and rape.

Glazebrook and DeWeese were expected to ask the judge to reduce their bond Tuesday, but Glazerook's public defender says he was just handed the case file this morning. He undoubtedly needs more time to prepare.

Michael DeWeese told the judge he is still trying to hire his own attorney and hopefully will have one by the end of the week. DeWeese himself asked the judge to lower his bail now, explaining he has a warehouse job paying $10 and hour and could help pay for an attorney. The judge declined, explaining he wasn't going to consider the issue without an attorney present.

The two men could be back in court next week. Because the charges against them are so serious, it's likely the judge will demand to hear compelling arguments and evidence before considering lowering either bond.

Both were ordered to have no contact of any kind with the alleged victims.
