(BLOOMFIELD) - Max Jordan, president of Jordan and Vaught Insurance, was named the 2014 recipient of the Harvey Hannah Award by the Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce during their annual meeting and dinner Thursday night at the WestGate Academy.
The Greene County Daily World says Jordan expressed his appreciation for the award named after the late Bloomfield veteran, educator and community-minded resident of Bloomfield. The award is presented yearly to a member of the community that is active and passionate about the town.
Judy Wise held back tears as she spoke before introducing her father.
Jordan owned the Jordan Feed Store and today is a successful businessman.
The Chamber also introduced a new award during Thursday's event as the Bloomfield State Bank was honored with the first Bloomfield Business of The Year honor.
They were selected following a combination of on-line voting by visitors to the Chamber's website and a final decision by chamber members.
The business has been a Bloomfield institution since 1873 and is one of the e largest institutions in the entire state of Indiana, the top third in the number of assets they own.
Accepting the award for the bank was Emeritus Director Lavon Yoho.
Yoho added that the company has tried to avoid losing sight of the communities they serve, something each employee has kept in mind through the years by encouraging employees to work with local program throughout the community.
As well as honoring the two recipients, the evening featured two speakers with a distinct appreciation of America's veterans. The keynote speaker was U.S. Army Medal of Honor winner and Indiana native SFC Sammy L. Davis.
Davis offered the audience both some insight into the perils he faced in the Vietnam Conflict where he was awarded the Medal of Honor after his heroic actions saved his artillery battery after it had come under heavy attack by Viet Cong forces and how the honor affected his life -- including having the honor to know several Commanders-in-Chief.
Davis signed autographs and posed for photos with guests after the dinner.
Prior to Davis' stirring speech, the Chamber dinner guests were given a presentation by Jerry Vest of Indy Honor Flight.
Honor Flight is a group that sponsors and oversees trips to Washington, D.C. and the World War II Memorial for World War II veteran.
