Accident Knocks Out Power

Last updated on Monday, November 17, 2014

(BEDFORD) - More than 1,400 Duke Energy customers were without power in downtown Bedford. The power went out just after 10 a.m.

By about 11 a.m., power had been restored to all but about 130 customers, according to Angeline Protegere, a spokeswoman with Duke Energy.

Protegere says the outage occurred when a vehicle struck a pole at 26th and I streets. The pole had to be replaced before the power could be restored to others. Officials hope to have the power restored by 1 p.m.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and Lincoln Elementary School was among customers without power. A generator is in use and the outage is not affecting 911 or other calls directed to the department at the Sheriff's Department.

At Lincoln Elementary, lunches were brought in from the high school and middle school to feed students and a backup generator was in use to supply lights
