Last updated on Monday, November 24, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Becky’s Place, a shelter for women and children, will host a 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Walk on Thanksgiving Day.

Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis and her husband are among those sponsoring the event which will begin at 9 a.m. at Harp Commons on the west side of the downtown square. Proceeds from the run and walk will go toward helping Becky's Place raise money for a $50,000 match challenge. The shelter has until Dec. 31 to meet the challenge.

The Hope Full 5k Adult Entry fee is $28.00. Fun Walk entry fee is $10.00. Children 11 to 18 years old, 5K Entry Fee is $20. Families of four or more $60.00 registration for either event. Team registration for up to 10 participants is $200.00. Make checks payable to Becky's Place.

The Hope Full 5K is for anyone who wants to "express thanks and be a blessing to women and children who do not have a home of their own" on Thanksgiving.

"Thanksgiving Day is one of the biggest race days in our country," said Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis in a news release. "Thus the inspiration for marrying the two ideas: a way to stay healthy and simultaneously display thankfulness for our many blessings by helping others, and specifically women and children experiencing homelessness in our community and this region."

Participants can register at the Bedford Chamber next door to City Hall until 4 p.m. Wednesday or online at www.BeckysPlaceBedford.org.

Race day registration is from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

"Race day should prove to be a lot of fun too. We will have a turkey (person in a turkey costume) to at least start the run and there may even be a few pilgrims on site as well," Girgis added. "We have also started reaching out to residents and businesses along the route and are asking them to help us make the route festive. This is not a competitive race. It is a fun activity that is geared for participants of all ages and skill levels. The 5K will be timed but is not part of a competitive race series."
