(WORTHINGTON) - 25-year-old Jarrod Wampler of Worthington was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly battered an officer who was trying to help him after Wampler allegedly had taken too many sleeping pills.

Worthington Police Department Officers were called to assist Greene County EMS with Wampler at shortly before 6 a.m.

Wampler was hallucinating, unable to speak clearly, and having trouble standing.

When police arrived at the home Wampler was outside, wearing a pair of boxer shorts and a sleeveless shirt, with a shoe on one foot and a sock on the other.

He was shivering, so he attempted Wampler in his police car and turned up the heat while waiting on EMS to arrive. Wampler pushed the officer to the side of the car and ran off. There was a short chase before Wampler turned and hit the officer in the chest. There was an altercation and the officer was able to handcuff Wampler and take him to the police car.

When the officer attempted to put Wampler in the car, Wampler became combative again and kicked the officer in the chest. Other officers were from the Greene County Sheriff's Department and Linton responded and Wampler became combative again.

Wampler was transported to Greene County General Hospital, where he was medically cleared and released and taken to jail on charges of battery against a police officer and resisting arrest. Doctors say Wampler had not taken sleeping pills but ingested bath salts.
