(WASHINGTON) - It has been 11 months since a F-1 tornado caused destruction in western Daviess County and then ripped apart Sycamore Street in Washington.
After months of work, Daviess County Emergency management Agency Director Paul Goss says the area is showing little signs of damage.
Private insurance helped many rebuild their homes. The Washington Times-Herald reports, another seven homeowners received help rebuilding from volunteers that serve on the Long Term Recovery team. The repairs took time because of the volunteer workforce.
The Daviess County recovery was done without help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or the Indiana Emergency Management Agency. Requests for state and federal disaster declarations were turned down twice.
Goss says because of that things moved slower and there were less funds available. Repairs were made through donations and volunteer contributions of time and talents. Two families received low interest Small Business Administration Loans. SBA says businesses and non-profits can still apply for the loan. The deadline is Nov. 1.
