(BLOOMINGTON) - A Tibetan Buddhist monastery opened Saturday in Bloomington

The Gaden KhachoeShin monastery sits on a 128-acre piece of land that was purchased in 2007.

Construction on the 21,000 square-foot monastery began in 2012 and expands the existing Dagom Gaden Tensung Ling Buddhist monastery in Bloomington.

Donations from students around the world funded the multi-million dollar project.

The monks follow the teachings of the Gelupga lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The Dalai Lama is both their political and spiritual leader.

Jamyang Lama, resident monk and teacher at the monastery, says it will serve as a residence for four monks, and will also serve as a space for Buddhist teachings.

Monks from all over the world were in town for this weekend's opening, including some well-known, highly revered teachers.
