(BEDFORD) - The Gospel Gala For Bertha's Mission has raised more than $7,500 so far.

"We still have several pledges still out and several people still have auction items they have not paid for and picked," says Board member Boomer Christy. "So that figure is not our total."

Bertha's Mission, located at the corner of Fifth and J streets at the former Chuck's Soul Food, serves meals Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Bedford and Mondays and Fridays in Mitchell at the First Church of God.

They are open from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. till 6:30 p.m. at each location.

The mission serves up to 80 people on any given day.

"We could see 38 to 40 people during the afternoon meal and then another 28 to 32 at the evening meal," Christy says. "Some days there is not an empty seat."

Bertha's Missions opened it's Mitchell location after an outcry for help.

"There was an outcry from those that didn't have a way or vehicle to the Bedford location," Christy says. "They either didn't have a vehicle or the gas to drive to Bedford so we expanded our service."

The mission is also looking at expanding their service to include delivering meals to those that are homebound.

"We are working on developing a relationship with an organization that would allow us to use their vehicles, gas and insurance with us providing the meals to reach that that are not able to leave their homes," Christy says.

The mission is also looking at being open seven days a week.

"Hunger doesn't stop on the weekends," Christy added.

But the mission can not run on idea only they need volunteers and donations to feed the hungry in Lawrence County.

Donations of meats, canned goods, lemonade, tea and coffee, disposable dinnerware like plastic silverware, dinner plates, coffee and beverage cups, napkins, cleaning supplies are also needed.

"Monetary donations are also accepted for items like paying the electric bill," Christy says. "And none of this would be possible if it were not for our fantastic volunteers and the support of this community."

If you would like to volunteer or make donations call Boomer Christy at 278-3180 or 278-4167 if there is no answer please leave a message.
