Last updated on Friday, October 10, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Thanks to the Stellar grant several downtown businesses could get new facade.

The aim of the project is to rehabilitate and renovate about 30 facades around and near the Bedford courthouse square.

Business and building owners meet with Scott Carnegie, architect and project manager with DLZ, an architectural and engineering firm based in Indianapolis; and Trena Carter, grant administrator with Administrative Resources association Wednesday night.

According to city officials, a total of $826,800 is available to pay for both the planning and construction phases. The total includes $699,040 from state grants and approximately $127,760 in local matching money. Business owners who choose to participate must put up 20 percent of the construction costs.

In the first phase, architects and engineers will assess the buildings' structural soundness, research their historical appearances and propose designs to the owners. It will also generate a plan and cost estimates for contractors. This will be done at no cost to the building owners.

Once approved, the second phase will see construction to implement those changes.

Building owners who agree to participate must maintain the facade for at least seven years.
