(BLOOMINGTON) - A sculpture of Pulitzer Prize winning World War II correspondent and IU Journalism’s most famed alumnus, Ernie Pyle was erected to in front of the pathway to Sample Gates at Franklin Hall, the soon-to-be Media School at Indiana University.
Harold "Tuck" Langland, produced the sculpture. He is also the artist of the Herman B Wells sculpture on campus.
The bronze sculpture is based off photos of Pyle reporting from the trenches during the war. Pyle, who wrote his columns from the soldier's viewpoint was killed by sniper fire while reporting from the Pacific war zone in 1945.
The sculpture depicts Pyle sitting behind a typewriter with a coffee cup sitting nearby. Across the table is an empty seat for visitors to sit at.
Associate Dean of The Media School Lesa Hatley Major says the sculpture is a tangible way of honoring Pyle's legacy.
The sculpture will be officially dedicated Friday during Homecoming weekend. IU President Michael McRobbie will preside at the ceremony.
