Sidewalk Improvements Coming To Salem

Last updated on Tuesday, October 28, 2014

(SALEM) - Sidewalks surrounding the Salem square will be improved, thanks to a $400,000 Main Street grant from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

The total project dollar amount is actually $500,000, counting the city's match, explained Carol Brough, Heart of Salem, chairwoman but she stressed no taxpayer dollars will be used for the match.

When work on refurbishing the sidewalks and possibly replacing benches on the square will begin isn't yet known.

The Heart of Salem committee includes Denise Newkirk, Ronnie Voyles, Pat Persinger, Cindy Walton, Joy Bierly and Mayor Bower. The group plans to apply for additional funding in the future and said the sidewalk renovation is just the first step in their vision for downtown.
