Robbery Motive In Jackson County Murder

Last updated on Tuesday, October 21, 2014

(JACKSON CO.) - Authorities say that robbery appears to be the motive in the death of 52-year-old Richard Smith of Dupont.

Police say the two suspects, 21-year-old Jovonnie Mayes of Seymour and 22-year-old Jody Brooks of North Vernon only knew Smith for a very short time before his death.

The men were found in Harrison County in possession of a stolen truck taken from a nearby trailer park in the area where Smith's body was discovered.

Smith's naked body was found just before 1 p.m. Friday behind apartments on North Fifth Street in a dumpster.

Police say a person who lives in the area discovered the body when taking out the trash.

Police say Smith was beaten to death by the two men. He suffered a gash on his head and his clothes were scattered nearby on the ground.

The body of Richard A. Smith also was covered in blood, according to Detective Ivory Sandefur, the first officer to arrive at the scene.
