(PAOLI) - A Paoli man died from a head injury while separating calves from their mothers on Wednesday.

81-year-old Jerry Meadows was a member of the Paoli Town Council.

According to Orange County Sheriff Richard Dixon, police received a 911 call at 10 a.m. Tuesday requesting an ambulance to 2082 East State Road 56.

Dixon says Meadows was knocked down by the cattle and suffered a head injury and was bleeding.

An ambulance, police and first responders from Paoli and Southeast Township volunteer fire departments rushed to the scene.

At 10:11 a.m., an Air Evac helicopter was requested and Meadows was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital where he died Wednesday peacefully surrounded by family members.

Orange County Republican Party Chairman Jack Hinkle will call a caucus of precinct committee chairmen from six precincts in the town to appoint a new council member to fill Meadows seat.
