Last updated on Wednesday, October 22, 2014

(WASHINGTON) - The North Daviess School Board recommended coaches for both the boys and girls basketball programs and accepted the resignation of Deanne Mayfield, who had served as band director since August of 2008. Mayfield’s last day will be Oct. 31.

The Washington Times Herald reports that those recommended for girls coaching positions include Beth Smith (fifth and sixth grade), Nicole Willis (fifth grade), Tom Tippery (sixth grade), Bryce Wilz and Shelbi Samsil (seventh grade), Gary Allen and Gracie Myer (eighth grade),and Lindsey Secrest Trimble and Tiffany Rathgeber (varsity assistants).

Boys recommendations are John Mokris, Roger Carrithers and Logan Wagler (assistant coaches), Lucas Swartzentruber (freshman coach), Clay Raber (junior varsity coach), Brock Higgins (eighth grade), Steven McNabb (seventh grade), John Brittion (head elementary coach), Brian Wagler, Brayden Wesner and Brandon Callison (elementary coaches), and Rick Wittmer (volunteer elementary coach).

Also approved were Joe Higgins, Cole Wolford, Ethan Wilson, Dane Holder, Gabe Swartzentruber, Randy Blevins, Pat Wilson, Kendall Wittmer, Alex Wittmer, Lewis Nugent, Thomas Nugent, Isaac Swartzentruber, Dwain Jolliff, Aaron Harbstreit, Nick Crays, and Clayton Byrer.

A larger crowd than normal was on hand in support of not only Mayfield but also the students involved in the school's band and choir and band programs. With Mayfield's resignation, parents felt the choir and band programs may become jeopardize if the school board decides to combine the band and choir programs for the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Bob Bell assured the concerned group of parents, including Mayfield, as well as students, that the programs are not being reduced and that Jeff Vandermel, who already works for the school corporation, would be taking over Mayfield's classes first through fourth periods.

Bell explained that Mayfield not only taught band but also was a study hall monitor and taught a rotational junior high class among other positions. Vandermel will be handling the music classes while Kristen O'Haver will tend to the seventh grade rotational class. Study hall supervision will be also be reassigned. Vandermel will receive a stipend for the extracurricular activities associated with the band program.
