Mitchell Residents Can Review Comprehensive Plan Tonight

(MITCHELL) - A public meeting on Mitchell's Comprehensive Plan will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Staff from Lochmueller Group, along with the Mitchell Plan Commission, will share a summary of comments and will conduct the public meeting.

A copy of the Comprehensive Plan will be available for review during the meeting, at Mitchell City Hall and at the Mitchell Community Public Library. It can also be viewed and downloaded via the project website at:

Following is an outline of some of the issues addressed in the Comprehensive Plan:

  • Downtown revitalizatio,
  • Enhance the gateways into Mitchell
  • Plan for future development along State Road 37
  • Update the zoning ordinance and zoning map
  • Redevelop the Opera House
  • Develop new events and festivals to attract new visitors
  • Repurpose the former Pamida building for Southern Indiana Sports Recreation and Youth Center
  • Create a "Friends of Spring Mill" organization to foster new and expanded activities at the park
  • Develop a trail, shuttle or streetcar to connect Spring Mill State Park and downtown Mitchell
  • Develop and market industrial sites in and around Mitchell
  • Support local business development and entrepreneurship pursuits
  • Develop a water/sanitary sewer/storm sewer master plan
  • Develop a strategy to recycle lots and structures that no longer meet code
  • Pursue resources to develop senior and affordable housing opportunities
  • Add biking and walking trails throughout Mitchell
  • And, future land use concepts
