(BEDFORD) - A Mitchell man was arrested Tuesday night after causing a scene at Walmart.

Bedford police were called to the store at 7:18 p.m. after store security reported there was a man in the store that was possibly intoxicated and acting suspicious.

When police arrived they set up surveillance outside the store and waited for the man to leave. But then security called again and said the man had been in the store for more than an hour and was continuing to act intoxicated and was beginning to bother customers.

Police entered the store and approached 29-year-old Matthew Irwin who then became verbally loud and was using profanity.

"Officers asked Mr. Irwin to stop and he refused," says Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley. "Officers then escorted Mr. Irwin to the front office. Mr. Irwin was having a hard time walking and when they got into the office he continued to be verbally abusive and he was again asked to stop and refused so he was arrested."

Officers searched Irwin's pockets and discovered a baggie filled with a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana and a set of scales.

Officers arrested Irwin on charges of disorderly conduct, public intoxication on a controlled, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
