(BEDFORD) - A Mitchell man, who Lawrence County Prosecutor Michelle Woodward called “a danger to the community,” was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of invasion of privacy, domestic violence and burglary. 36-year-old Darick Reynolds, of 158 Broomsage Road has a criminal history that dates back to when he was a juvenile.
Reynolds was arrested on August 26, after he became upset with his wife when she didn't get him a birthday card. The two got into a fight that turned physical and he hit her in front of minor children. Reynolds then left the home on Dean Street in Mitchell and was found on North Eighth Street near the greenhouse and was arrested.
Robbins asked Reynolds about an incident that happened in Lawrence Superior Court I prior to the sentencing hearing on the domestic violence charge. During the hearing, Reynolds had asked Superior Court I Judge Michael Robbins to lift the no contact order. Robbins refused. While in a hold cell at the court, Reynolds became upset after the judge's ruling and began yelling and banging his head against a wall.
Reynolds apologized for his actions saying it was an "outburst of anger."
Public Defender Lorinda Youngcourt said sentencing Reynolds to prison would not help his angry issues - saying prisons were a place of violence.
She asked Judge Robbins to consider a sentence of 12 years in the Indiana Department of Correction system, with four suspended as a transition back into the community for the Class B felony burglary charge.
But Prosecutor Woodward recommended a longer sentence saying Reynolds had committed two previous burglaries, one in Lawrence County and another in Washington County.
She also added Reynolds had a history of meth use until 2013 when he was sentenced to prison.
Judge Robbins sentenced Reynolds to 20 years in prison. On the invasion of privacy charge, Reynolds will serve 365 days in the Lawrence County jail with credit for 153 days already served. He will then serve two years on the domestic violence charge. He sentenced Reynolds to 17 years in prison on the Class B felony charge of burglary, with four years suspended. He will serve those 4 years on supervised probation.
