(ST. LOUIS, MO). - The husband of a former Indiana University cheerleader pleaded guilty to her murder on Monday and now faces 60 years in prison.

59-year-old William Lynn Gunter entered a guilty plea to second degree murder in the death of his wife 55-year-old Suzanne Gunter.

The Gunters lived in Town and Country, Mo., near St. Louis. Suzanne died on March 18, 2013.

Town and Country police says neighbors were called to the house by William Gunter, after he claimed his wife had fallen down the stairs and was injured. Several neighbors were apparently summoned to the home just after the incident, and it was one of them, not Gunter, who called 911.

William Gunter initially told police that Suzanne had suffered a tragic accident. Emergency personnel found her just inside the front door of the first floor of her home at around 3 p.m. She was rushed to Mercy Hospital where she died.

But while performing a routine autopsy, the medical examiner quickly saw that Suzanne Gunter's injuries did not square with her husband's story. She had suffered severe head trauma and broken bones that the medical examiner says were inflicted with some kind of instrument.

After realizing there were story discrepancies, police arrested Gunter on charges of first-degree murder.

Suzanne, also known as Suzy, was well-known and liked by her friends and colleagues. She graduated from IU in 1980 and from North Central High School in 1976.
