(BEDFORD) - There are many myths about grief and how to recover from the loss of a loved one.

Some say, "time heals all wounds," while others counsel to just "be strong." Some people may want to stay busy and fill their time so they avoid the feelings that come with the grieving process, while others may tend to isolate themselves.

For those working through the grieving process, however, often the support of others going through the same thing can be the most comforting.

"One common theme we hear is how good it is to have the support of others going through the same thing," says Sula Eads, one of the leaders of the Hope for Healing support group at IU Health Bedford Hospital. "The group provides a place for those who are walking through similar situations an opportunity to share and connect with each other."

The group, which begins its next six-week session on October 16, covers topics that help people understand and deal with the issues that surround their grief. Eads leads the group in discussions about the stages of grief, ways to cope with grief, ways people grieve, anger, forgiveness, hope, how to identify those who are in their support system and how important it is communicate when they need help.

"Our group is open to anyone who is feeling a loss in their life. This includes those who are walking through cancer or other terminal illness with a loved one," says Eads. "We recognize that grief can begin before the loss of life."
