Gateway Project In Washington On Schedule - Celebration Saturday

Last updated on Wednesday, October 1, 2014

(WASHINGTON) - A road project that is expected to upgrade the entrance to Washington is running on schedule and city officials are celebrating with the public Saturday.

The $3-million Gateway Drive project will cause some traffic detours beginning Friday and will remain in effect until November 17.

Industrial Drive will be accessible only from the west and businesses and homes east of Industrial Drive on East National Highway will only be accessible from the east

There will be a lot of temporary detours during the next 45 days of construction.

The Gateway Drive project will put a new road between the U.S. 50 Bypass and East National Highway. It will include a stoplight on the 50 Bypass and a roundabout at East National Highway and Industrial Drive.

The project has been underway most of the summer but has begun taking shape in the last few weeks and is a combined effort of city, state and county officials.

A special educational event is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.at the Eastside Park Community Building and grounds.

City officials invite the public to learn more about driving the roundabout that is part of the project.

Participants can drive on a simulation course of the new roundabout scaled for golf carts. The course will include simulated traffic with golf carts driving to random locations while participants will be directed to drive to pre-determined locations. The roundabout simulation will be on the parking lot immediately southeast of the community building.

Other educational stations will be located in the community building including videos on driving roundabouts, aerial displays of the project design, a video simulation of the actual roundabout on Gateway Drive and a Hot Wheels station where kids can "drive" Hot Wheels on a scaled layout of the new roundabout.

Local youth and civic organizations will have food and beverage booths and winners will be drawn for door prizes, including a 42" flat screen television, compliments of German American Bank.

Citizens are encouraged to come out to enjoy this family-friendly event before or after enjoying the Heartbeat of Washington's Fall Fest on Main Street.
