Bloomington Man Killed After Jeep Struck Culvert

Last updated on Tuesday, October 21, 2014

(JACKSON CO.) - A 19-year-old Bloomington man died after he was thrown from his Jeep after it struck a culvert Saturday night.

According to Jackson County Sheriff's Department officers, Josiah Wesley Winks was driving a 2004 Jeep Cherokee in the 11000 block of U.S. 50 West near the Jackson-Lawrence county line at 10:19 p.m. when the accident happened.

Police say that the Jeep hit a driveway culvert, causing it to go airborne. It then hit the ground twice before spinning around. The Jeep then went into the air backwards before it came to rest against a tree.

Upon impact, police say, Winks was thrown from the vehicle.

Winks was pronounced dead at the scene by Jackson County Coroner Roger Wheeler. An autopsy that was performed Monday by Pathologist Dr. Wes Whitler at Schneck Medical Center shows Winks died of blunt force trauma. Toxicology results are pending.

Assisting at the scene were Jackson County Ambulance Service and Owen Township Volunteer Fire Department.
