Birdseye Man Killed By Passing Train

(BIRDSEYE) - A Birdseye man was hit and killed by a passing train near the Whistle Stop Tavern Tuesday night.

Deputies were called to the scene at about 10:43 p.m.

According to authorities, they believe that 44-year-old Dwight D. Ellis was walking just south of the Whistle Stop Tavern when he was hit by a passing Norfolk Southern train.

The train crew contacted authorities advising them of the accident.

Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department first responders immediately began resuscitation efforts on Ellis. He was then taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital. There, he was pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor.

Deputies believe alcohol was a factor in the accident and the investigation is ongoing.

Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department First Responders, Memorial Emergency Medical Services, Indiana State Police and Norfolk Southern Police assisted during the incident.
