(BEDFORD) - The St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church will celebrate 150 years at its Heritage Festival this weekend.
The church at 18th and I streets will host a carnival featuring games, rides, a puppet show and soup sampler beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
The festival begins with the Holy Moly 5K at 8:30 a.m.Saturday and other activities include music, dancing, vendors, pie contest, raffles, bake sale, and concessions featuring German foods will kick off at 11 a.m.
Activities will take place in the parking lot, school gym and cafeteria.
St. Vincent had its earliest beginnings as a mission parish with St. Charles Catholic Church in Bloomington. It became an established parish in 1864. In 1893, construction began on a new church, which still stands.
Rev. Rick Eldred says the limestone church, with a capacity of about 500, was built for $21,000 and is valued at more than $5 million today. Eldred noted the church was one of the first buildings anywhere to use limestone veneer on the inside.
