(SALEM) - In the early morning hours of Sunday, Tumbleweed Southwest Grill, at the corner of North Water and Mulberry Streets in Salem, burned to the ground.

The restaurant is a complete loss. Salem City Police say the fire was discovered by an officer on patrol at 2:23 a.m. with firefighter from the Salem fire department arriving five minutes later.

The favorite eatery for over a decade for its Tex-Mex fare and steaks and wait staff has won several awards in Salem's Leader Publishing Company's People's Choice Awards.

Salem Firefighters returned to the scene of a restaurant fire about 9:30 a.m. Sunday after the fire rekindled.

Salem Fire Chief Tom Day says when firefighter arrived when the fire was first reported flames were shooting out of the roof.

Two Salem Fire Department trucks responded, along with one engine, both tankers and a tanker from Campbellsburg. Washington County EMS personnel were also on scene

Day says the damage is so extensive, no cause may be able to be established. He did say electrical work had recently been completed at the restaurant.

The location has a rich history in restaurant fame -- having been the location of Duffy's and later Big John's and then Tumbleweed in the mid-1980s.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
