Police Say Hundreds Of Thousands Of Dollars Embezzled From Owen Co.

(OWEN CO.) - Indiana State Police claim that Republican Owen county Council member Angie Lawson may have embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from the county’s coffers.

Lawson is also chief deputy auditor and has filed for a candidate for clerk.

Police say taxpayer's money was spent on everything from catnip to a $325 Visa gift card.

Police began their investigation Owen County Auditor Mike Wood took his concerns of credit card misuse to Prosecutor Don Vandermoere. He then asked the Indiana State police to investigate.

Wood became suspicious after a Walmart bill was traced to a Spencer post office box used by Lawson.

Court documents show that 56-year-old Lawson was seen on videotape in several Walmart stores often spending more than $2,000 at a time, using the county's credit card.

Morgan County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Cline, says the investigation continues and no criminal charges have been filed against Lawson.
