Police Continue Investigation Into Aaron Byers' Death

Last updated on Tuesday, September 16, 2014

(ELNORA) - Police continue their investigation into the murder of 40-year-old Aaron Byers, who was found dead near a cornfield on the west side of County Road 300 East, just south of State Road 58 in Elnora Saturday.

Law enforcement officials found Byers' car in a nearby cornfield.

Indiana State Police ruled the death a homicide and are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. The autopsy was conducted Monday in Terre Haute.

Troopers and Daviess County deputies spent all day Saturday and Saturday night following up on leads and doing more interviews on Sunday and Monday, according to Indiana State Police Sergeant Philip Hensley.

"We really don't have a suspect at this time. We are just working through all of the information," Hensley said.

Crimes like murder don't happen in the town 731 people, and word traveled fast and Elnora Police Chief Dave Fleming is concerned.

"Whatever rumors and finger pointing is going on it really needs to stop because it's causing fear in town. Let the Indiana State Police detectives finish the investigation and then the truth will come out. Let them do their job, they don't need anybody else doing it for them," Fleming added.

Byers, who owned Custom Concrete, LLC, was involved in community activities and was a good friend of Fleming.

"He cared about this town and the people in it," Fleming says. "He would do whatever he could to help. He was helping city police build a gun range. We now plan to name that range in his memory."

Anyone with information about the murder is asked to call the Indiana State Police.
