(DUBOIS CO.) - 4-year-old Terrance is home from the hospital recovering after being attacked by a dog Sept. 8 in Huntingburg. And so is the dog.
According to Assistant Huntingburg Police Chief Ronnie Bowman, the attack happened just before 3:30 outside a home in the 500 block of East 7th Street.
The dog, which belongs to the boy's father, attacked and bit the boy multiple times in the head and has been returned to the home of Bennett Perez, who is Terrance's grandfather and who was housing the dog when it attacked the boy.
According to Terrance's mother Danielle Wigodinski, the boy was taken to Jasper Hospital where he under went 4 hours of surgery and hundreds of stitches to close the numerous wounds to his face and skull.
Wigodinski is upset the dog has not been euthanized.
"It was terrifying," says Danielle. "It was probably, it was the worst thing I've ever been through. I had to jump on her (the dog) and actually pull her down to the ground."
The pit bull named "Baby Girl" outweighs Terrance by close to 20 pounds, but had never shown any aggression. Danielle says both she and Terrance were just standing there when the dog just snapped.
"And when I looked at her in the eyes, it wasn't Baby Girl at all," says Danielle. "She was a different dog completely. She looked lost."
Perez says he doesn't want the dog killed and is hoping to find a rescue group to take her.
"We don't have any kids around her and if someone comes and visits we put Baby Girl in a back room under lock and key," Perez says. "I just want to find a rescue group to take her."
Police say no charges will be filed in the case.
