Last updated on Monday, September 22, 2014

(NEEDMORE) - A Washington man was arrested after he stabbed another man at a gathering at the Lothlorien Nature Sanctuary at 559 McFadden Ridge Road Sunday morning.

Lawrence County police were called to the sanctuary just after 7 a.m. Sunday after a report of a fight and stabbing. The caller reported that one man had suffered a stab wound and that the person with the knife had been disarmed and was being held until police could arrive.

Officers, a Seals ambulance, and first responders from Marshall and Oolitic Volunteer Fire Departments responded.

Police arrested 27-year-old Alexander Werner of Washington on a charge of battery with a deadly weapon.

"There was a gathering of people and Mr. Werner was intoxicated and had been causing problems with others most of the night," says Sheriff Sam Craig. "He was being nuisance, putting plastic on the fire and just causing problems. That is when one of the men decided it was time to get Werner away from the group and he decided he didn't want to go and pulled a folded pocket knife and cut the man on the arm."

Others in the group then disarmed Werner and held him until police could arrive.

The injured injured was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital.
