Last updated on Monday, September 8, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man who police said left a small dog locked in a crate in his garage for two days without food or water was arrested Saturday on a preliminary charge of animal neglect.

21-year-old  Xing Lu, 21, was booked into the Monroe County Jail at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. He was later released on his own recognizance.

Lu told police a friend gave him the dog, but he didn't want it.

Lu admitted to leaving the dog in a crate in the garage and that he had not checked on the animal for several days.

Police say the dog was found alive, but its hair was falling out and the dog's feet were infected from standing in urine and feces.

The dog was taken to the Bloomington Animal Animal Shelter for treatment.
