(LINTON) - A Linton man was arrested after he injured his infant son, lied to doctors and the Department of Child Services.

Indiana State Police arrested 25-year-old Justin Johnson on a felony charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

According to ISP Master Trooper John Yung, Johnson's five-week-old son, was treated at Sullivan County Hospital and then transferred to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis on Sept. 10. The infant's injury consisted of an acute spiral fracture of his left humerus- an injury that a doctor at Riley explained as being consistent with child abuse and neglect.

A Department of Child Services caseworker noted that the spiral fracture to the infant's arm was caused by a twisting motion.

According to police Johnson gave conflicting explanations of how the injury happened, saying the child was hurt in a car crash on Sept. 3 and that he may have injured himself rolling over in his crib. He also suggested that a friend, his brother, or the infant's mother may have injured his son accidentally by picking him up wrong.

Johnson then admitted to the caseworker that he put the infant down to use the restroom and make him a bottle, then grabbed him by the arm and picked him up "pretty quick". Yung reported that Johnson stated he did not have much sleep and did not hurt the infant on purpose, but that he heard "a little crack" when he picked him up and that the infant screamed afterwards.

The caseworker asked Johnson why he had not been honest about the injury, and Johnson replied that he was scared.
The infant was treated and released with no surgical intervention needed.

Johnson's bond was set at $15,000 with an optional cash amount of $1,500.
