(LOOGOOTEE) - A survey has been drafted into a comprehensive plan for Loogootee.
Loogootee citizens desire the demolition of abandoned and/or dilapidated buildings and development of a new city pool.
Those were the top two priorities identified through a community-wide survey conducted May 27 to June 20 by Midwestern Engineers.
Those survey results will be included in the city's draft comprehensive plan update which is done every five years.
The city's initial plan was written in 2009 in anticipation of the development of Interstate 69, which will eventually connect Evansville with Indianapolis. The new highway currently runs north from Evansville to near the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center. Plans are for the highway to eventually connect with the current I-69, which runs north from Indianapolis into Michigan.
In a related economic development matter, Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corporation will submit its application to the state Nov. 3 for grant funding to allow the non-profit agency to purchase the former East Elementary building. The grant will be awarded by the end of February 2015.
Hoosier Uplands agreed to purchase the former elementary building from the Loogootee School Corporation for $110,000. Plans are to close that deal in March 2015.
The plan is to rename the building Eagle Place Apartments, and to build 20 apartments for low-income seniors.
The Loogootee City Council approved a 10-year tax abatement for Hoosier Uplands.
