(LOOGOOTEE) - State championship basketball coach Mike Wagoner has resigned from the boys basketball position at Loogootee.

Wagoner won the 2012 IHSAA Class A boys state basketball title with the Lions, the first in the school's history.

WTHI-TV first reported the resignation Friday evening. It is not confirmed if Wagoner is still teaching at the school or has resigned or who his successor will be.

The Washington Herald reports,Wagoner was 91-44 in six years at Loogootee, including the 2012 state championship. Last season, the Lions were 6-15 as they tried to rebuild after graduation and suspension.

Wagoner's resignation, two years removed from the state title, continues a rocky pattern of Loogootee coaches following the retirement of Jack Butcher, the winningest basketball coach in Indiana history, almost 12 years ago. Steve Brett, Wagoner's predecessor, resigned under pressure in 2008.

Wagoner also had to fight for his job in 2011, when Loogootee administrators recommended to its school board not to renew his contract. After a public outcry, Wagoner's contract was renewed. The Lions then won the state title the following season.

Before his time as basketball coach, Wagoner was Loogootee's baseball coach for many years.
