(UNDATED) - Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance personnel have been scheduled for pavement preservation operations this week along thirty-three lane miles of U.S. Highway 50 in Jackson and Lawrence Counties.
Beginning this morning - weather permitting - crews will chip seal the eastbound lane of U.S. 50 from State Road 446 to S.R. 235.
On Wednesday, INDOT officials hope to chip seal the eastbound lane of U.S. 50 from S.R. 235 to Brownstown, then the westbound lane back to S.R. 235.
On Thursday, state maintenance crews plan to complete chip seal operations in the westbound lane of U.S. 50 from S.R. 235 to a terminus just west of S.R. 446.
Flaggers will be present to direct motorists around moving worksites. INDOT advises motorists to drive slowly and with caution along highways where chip seal materials are being applied.
Chip seal operations involve spraying liquid asphalt on the roadway, then topping it with small chips of limestone aggregate. This process extends service life of the highway by sealing pavement from moisture intrusion and ultraviolet ray degradation. In addition, the chips improve safety for the motoring public by restoring a high coefficient of friction for added skid resistance.
This kind of pavement preservation measure is extremely cost effective. Every $1 invested in chip seal applications today yields $6 to $14 in savings on future expenditures.
