Group Looking For Items For Gus Grissom Boyhood Home

Last updated on Friday, September 12, 2014

(MITCHELL) - The group that oversees the Mitchell boyhood home of Mercury astronaut Gus Grissom is looking to add more items that belonged to Grissom or his family to the decore.

Volunteers with Virgil I. Grissom Memorial Inc. have been opening up his family's small bungalow house on Grissom Avenue to visitors at least two Saturdays a month.

Group president Steve Grissom says members hope to make the house look as much as possible like it did when his cousin was growing up. They would also like to possibly add displays on the back porch or in the garage that depict Grissoms Air Force and NASA days.

Grissom was one of the seven original Project Mercury astronauts and the first man to fly twice in space. He and two other astronauts died in 1967 when a flash fire swept through their Apollo spacecraft during a pre-launch test.

The house will be open Sept. 20, Oct. 11, and Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The exception will be on Persimmon Festival Parade day, which is Sept. 27, when the house will be open following the parade.

Anyone having items for the home can contact Steve Grissom at 583-3643 or by email at stevenpgrissom@gmail.com
or Jeff Routh at 278-0448 or jeffero_99@yahoo.com. Monetary donations can be mailed to the house at Virgil I. Grissom Memorial, Inc., 407 S. Sixth St., Mitchell, IN 47446.
