(SWITZ CITY) - The ground breaking ceremony for the new Community Building at the Greene County 4-H Fairgrounds is set for 2 p.m. today.

The Greene County Daily World reports, Greene County Commissioners President Rick Graves along with fellow commissioners Ed Michael and Nathan Abrams as well as several members of the Greene County Council, Greene County Foundation and the Greene County Extension Service will welcome guests and the public.

Among those planning to attend are members of the organizations that will return to the building once it's completed early next year.

Both the GCF and the Extension service are temporarily housed in the trailers on the east end of White River Valley High School in Switz City. Their offices are fully functional thanks to a collaborative effort.

Work actually got underway at the site on Monday after Graves met with the architect and the general contractor -- Wolfe Construction of Vincennes -- last week.

"Preliminary site work began last Tuesday and should be completed early next week," Graves said. "The general contractor will begin work on Monday, so they will probably be working on the building the day of the ground breaking."
The project, which cost an estimated $1.2 million, calls for a thorough upgrade of the existing building as well as an addition of several conference rooms and offices.

Plans also call for an exhibition hall of around 5,000 square feet.

The new building will also be Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. That includes public restrooms which will be enlarged to handle the new design -- which can accommodate up to 500 people.

There are also plans to construct new sidewalks with the possibility of enlarging and paving the parking lot in the future.
