Expansion Work At Camp Atterbury Complete

Last updated on Wednesday, September 24, 2014

(ATTERBURTY) - Expansion work at the Indiana National Guard’s Camp Atterbury is complete, adding 1,200 beds and a dining facility to the training base and enlarging its rail yard facilities.

The work began three years ago with a land swap involving the National Guard, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the state Department of Correction. The National Guard says the expansion enhances the central Indiana facility's capabilities for reception, sustainment and deployment operations.

Camp officials have said that in the past two years the post has had more than 5,000 soldiers stay at one time at the camp but had only about 3,000 barracks beds, forcing some soldiers to sleep in temporary trailer housing.

A dedication ceremony is planned for Thursday at the base about 25 miles south of Indianapolis.
