Community To Kick Off National Hispanic Heritage Month With Celebration

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington in collaboration with La Casa/Latino Cultural Center, Latino Studies, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, International Services and El Centro Comunal Latino will kick-off National Hispanic Heritage Month with a reception and ceremony today.

The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m at The Mathers Museum of World Cultures, 416 N Indiana Ave. Bloomington, IN.

This event will begin a month long celebration and recognize those who have made great contributions to the Latino community in Bloomington and beyond. Participants will be able to visit various information booths, which highlight both campus and community related Latino programming.

During the ceremony, the City of Bloomington's Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs will recognize the recipients of their annual National Hispanic Heritage Month Leadership Awards. Award recipients are: the Outstanding Community Organization - The Monroe County Public Library; Outstanding Latino Leader - Daniel Soto; Outstanding Latino High School Senior - Alexmar Nin-Velez  and Outstanding Latino Community Supporter - Cynthia Ann Roberts.

The Commission will also allocate "Learn to Earn" medals to local Latino students for outstanding academic achievement.
