(BLOOMINGTON) - The nonprofit Jill's House in Bloomington, which serves as a home for cancer patients going to the IU Proton Therapy Center, is shutting down.

Indiana University announced last week the Proton Therapy Center was closing because of finances. It ran a $3.5 million deficit last year.

When the IU Proton Therapy center opened ten years ago as a cancer treatment facility, it was one of the first of its kind and the only one in the Midwest. When patients came from out of town, Jill's House served as a special place to stay.

Susan Dabkowski has been the director of Jill's house since it opened in 2008 and has seen hundreds of kids stay at the facility.

She says the house offered more than a place to stay. It offered companionship and even though the house is closing, the nonprofit's central mission of creating a loving environment was fulfilled.

The house will continue to serve its guests until the Proton Therapy closes in January.
