(PAOLI) - An Amish man was injured and his horse was euthanized after their buggy was struck by a semi-tractor trailer Wednesday afternoon on State Road 56, east of Paoli.
According to an Orange County Police report, the accident was reported at 1:55 p.m., just west of County Road 600 East.
54-year-old Lonnie Lambright of Paoli, who was thrown from the buggy, suffered severe leg and abdominal injuries. He was taken to IU Paoli Hospital.
Police say, 75-year-old Ronald Sons of Campbellsburg was traveling east on State Road 56 in a 1997 Peterbilt and had crested the hill when he saw the buggy traveling east in the eastbound lane. Sons applied his brakes leaving 75 feet of skid marks, before the vehicle's bumper struck the cart, knocking it off the south side of the road.
The horse was propelled down the road in front of the truck, which continued to slide leaving another 295 feet of skid marks before stopping. The semi stopped in the westbound lane with part of the trailer remaining in the eastbound lane.
The horse suffered severe injuries and had to be euthanized at the scene.
